Work with award winning wildlife, travel and landscape photographer Adriaan van Heerden on the 36exp Nature Photography Workshop at the London Wetland Centre. The Centre is a haven for wildlife right in the heart of London and a personal favourite of none other than Sir David Attenborough.
On this workshop you will learn how to photograph a variety of animals in their natural environment. London Wetland Centre is a great place to see otters as well as lots of birds, both native and migratory. There is also an abundance of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, and, if you’re really lucky, you might even spot the odd vole!
This workshop will give you a valuable insight into wildlife and nature photography, so you will be prepared to make the most of future photographic opportunities, whether it’s taking pictures of elephants on safari or bumblebees in your back garden.
Content of the Nature Photography Workshop:
– Gain experience of shooting animals in their natural environment. Voted the UK’s favourite nature reserve by readers of Countryfile magazine, London Wetland Centre offers a wide array of beautiful water birds from around the world, a family of adorable otters, and plenty of other wildlife such as lizards, marsh frogs, dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies. You’ll learn valuable techniques such as how to photograph fast-moving animals and how to deal with tricky lighting conditions.
– The day will start with a briefing in the onsite café during which Adriaan will share some of his best tips and tricks for photographing nature subjects. You will then have the opportunity to explore the Centre and find those subjects that are of most interest to you – Adriaan will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. The day will conclude with a feedback session to check that everyone met their objectives for the day.
Venue:
The workshop will take place at the London Wetland Centre, a nature reserve run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. The Centre is located in Barnes (West London). It is easily accessible by rail, bus, tube and car and there is plenty of parking on site. See the Centre’s website for details (www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/london).

In the last year he was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition; Runner-Up Winner in the Art Has No Borders International Art Competition on the Animal Kingdom; Highly Commended in the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition; shortlisted for the East West Art Awards 2014; and he also received an Honourable Mention in the Light Space and Time Gallery’s International SeaScapes Competition. He was selected to be one of four Artists in Residence at the Jarfo Gallery in Kyoto in April 2015. He runs regular photography workshops in the UK and annual wildlife photography safaris to East and Southern Africa.
Recommended Equipment for the Workshop:
Having the ability to get to a focal length of 300mm will be an advantage. This could be a 70-200mm lens on a cropped sensor DSLR, the same lens with a 1.4x teleconverter on a full frame sensor, or a 100-400 mm lens. You will need to be able to carry all your equipment with you from the meeting point all around the reserve, and this can get very tiring over the course of the day. Please bring plenty of memory cards as they fill up quickly with wildlife shooting. Also please bring wet weather gear for yourself and your camera as the workshop will go ahead whatever the elements throw at us.
If required Adriaan will be able to advise on future equipment purchases to help you meet your ambitions.
Limited to 8 attendees.
